As an essential part of the Global Studio: Japan Study Abroad experience, students engaged in various predeparture activities to ensure meaningful cultural immersion. Among these preparations, we were tasked with creating thoughtful gifts to share with the friends we would make along our journey, recognizing gift-giving as a deeply rooted tradition in Japanese culture.
In response, I designed the Friendship Stamp Series to celebrate the cultural connection between Shimada, Japan, and Newport, Rhode Island. This project reflects the enduring bond between these two locations, blending their rich traditions and distinctive elements into a cohesive and meaningful design.
Each of the two stamps symbolizes unity and peace, representing the essence of its respective culture—one honoring the timeless beauty of Japanese heritage, and the other showcasing the unique character of Rhode Island. Designed to be shared, these stamps encourage a personal act of connection: gifting one to a friend, family member, or someone special to extend the spirit of friendship beyond borders.
